My summary of the state of the mobile phone industry in the US
Elliot Ronen [17: 53:11]: What's funny about the whole situation is that two companies have now tried to break into the mobile phone industry with the intention of changing how it works:
Elliot Ronen [17: 53:15]: Number 2 is Google.
Elliot Ronen [17: 53:42]: The whole point of the Nexus 1 when it came out was that you could buy it through them, no subsidized price and it was vanilla Android, the carriers couldn't touch it
Elliot Ronen [17: 53:57]: And the Verizon version was canned, and it didn't have ATT 3G
Elliot Ronen [17: 54:08]: So it only ended up on T-mobile in the US, so only people in Syracuse could use it.
Elliot Ronen [17: 54:14]: The first was Apple.
Elliot Ronen [17: 54:28]: Who when the iPhone first came out, refused to let ATT subsidize it or offer it with a contract
Elliot Ronen [17: 54:36]: They were like, NO ATT YOUR RULES ARE DUMB
Elliot Ronen [17: 54:51]: BUY OUR PHONE IT DOES PRACTICALLY NOTHING BUT SHIIIIINYYYY $700
Elliot Ronen [17: 55:30]: And then Apple was like, "oh shit, we actually wanted to make money with this thing" and let ATT subsidize it down to $199 with the launch of the 3G and oh look now their stock price is $330.
Elliot Ronen [17: 55:40]: And the first iPhone and iPhone 3G were both crap
Elliot Ronen [17: 55:50]: So yeah, the system sucks, but if Apple and Google can't break it, it's unbreakable :/

Apple Drops Behind Android OS in Smartphone Market Last Quarter

I do not understand why everybody is so shocked that Android outsold iPhone OS last quarter. It seems like a no brainer to me. Here’s why:

  1. Device agnosticism: There are no less than 10 Android devices on the market in the US alone. I would hope 10 devices could outsell 1.
  2. iPhone 4: We know, thanks to the big iPhone leak a few weeks ago, that a substantial hardware upgrade for the iPhone is pending. 
  3. Aging hardware vs cutting edge: The iPhone’s screen is the same one they put in in 2007. Compare that to the higher resolution, sometimes OLED displays in new Android phones 

Look at those numbers two quarters from now. I guarantee the iPhone will be well back on top. 

This eBookNewser article is about how the growing Android market share is good for the ebook offerings on that platform. That’s true, but all of the major ebook distributors have apps on all desktop and mobile platforms, making this particular sales blip completely moot. Bring on the next iPhone!

Hands-On: Twin Screens Pack Potential in eDGe Netbook, E-Reader Combo | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

Earlier today I touched upon the Entourage eDGe as a niche product for students, but this Wired article seems to disagree with me: this detailed hands on with the latest revision of the eDGe hardware seems to have nothing but love for the part netbook, part e-reader. I really love what Entourage is doing here. We’ll see how it stacks up against the myriad of announcements at CES!
